Degree or Experience?

Is there really a good answer? I often tell my clients “a degree is proof of knowledge acquired, experience is proof of knowledge applied… so know what’s important to you, and why”.

For example, if JPL is working on a project with NASA on Mars orbital satellites and they need an astrophysicist on their team then your main concern would most likely be the knowledge acquired. However, if you are looking for a Manager, Director, or even a Senior Executive are you bound by the same standards? Every company is a snowflake, so know what’s REALLY important to you.

Some may have acquired the knowledge, memorized answers, pass tests, and gotten a degree but when it comes to applying that knowledge they may be inadequate, even disappoint you in execution, or may fail with the intricacies of interpersonal and professional relationships and partnership. On the flip side, you may have someone who only has the “on-hands” learning, or inter-organization training, but has proven success and experience in execution. They may not seem perfect but have proven that they apply the things they learn and have the skills listed above. They show that they are hungry for knowledge with a view to improving themselves. They show they have the humility to learn, cooperate, adapt, apply, and succeed.

There are so many real-world examples of successful entrepreneurs, business owners, executives, investors, and innovators that do not (or did not) have a degree. Oprah, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Jack Dorsey, Steven Spielberg, Wayne Huizenga… just to name a few. We can hardly argue the proof they applied the knowledge they had, and kept adapting to greater knowledge.

So don’t be boxed in by the traditional thinking that will limit your talent acquisition. Rather, know what’s important to you, and why.
